the Way, the Truth, the Life
We are sinners. We like to think of ourselves as being mostly good; yet when we consider ourselves in the light of God's law we find that we are not good. Consider just three of the Ten Commandments.
The Third commandment says: Thou Shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. Have you ever spoken God's name carelessly or without reverence? Everyone has.
The Ninth commandment says: Thou shalt not bare false witnness. Have you ever told a lie? Everyone has.
The Eighth commandment says: Thou shalt not steal. Have you ever taken something (the value makes no difference) that was not yours? Everyone has.
When we see ourselves in light of just three of the ten commandments we see ourselves to be blaspheming, lying, thieves. Left to ourselves we have a serious problem.
Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death,
Left to ourselves that is where everyman stands before God. The penalty for sin is not just physical death, though it is because of the introduction of sin into the world that all people will one day die physically. Ultimately the penalty for sin is spiritual death.
Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
I need to be good and to live a good life. Even if you could always do good from this point forward, what will you do with the sin you have already committed? What is more, is that no one can always do what is right before God, who is Holy and perfectly righteous. Even if I say. "I need to trust Jesus and live a good life" I am going to fall short, because I simply can not do anything that will meet God's Holy standard of perfect righteousness.
Proverbs 16:25 There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
God's final word to mankind is His Son.
Hebrews 1:1-2 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
1 John 4:14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.
First: Believe what God says about you and about Jesus Christ: Acknowledge, "I am a sinner deserving of the lake of fire." Believe that Jesus died on the cross for your sin.
Second: Ask Jesus to save you from your sin.
Romans 10:9-10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
